The Housemaid
Winner of the Nynorsk Prize of Literature 2024
The year is 1911. Julie Elisabeth Hoem, the youngest daughter of a fiddle maker, dies at a nursing home at the age of 75. In the local newspaper, it is stated that she had no survivors and left nothing behind.
The Housemaid tells her life story. Initially, Julie Elisabeth is a young girl who never lowers her gaze and attracts attention wherever she goes. But times change, and people are changed by the times. After serving in her early youth in fine houses in Christiansund, Julie Elisabeth lives as a housemaid in the prominent families of Bergen. She oversees many servants and joins the meals at the master’s table. However, she also comes to realize the vast gap between social classes, and that her privileged position isn’t truly her own.
Based on a sparse collection of historical facts, Edvard Hoem brings to light a woman’s life in a time before the welfare state. The Housemaid is a novel about how random decisions lead to lifelong consequences, about dreams of love that were never fulfilled, but also about a life filled with meaning.
