Bootlegger Jack Rivers is arrested by the police officer Ludvig Paaske after a dramatic car chase in 1924. Fourteen years later we meet the pair again in a different dynamic. Paaske is a private investigator and Jack is his assistant. One day a lady by the name Vera Gruber visits Paaske because she suspects her husband is cheating on her. This seemingly harmless task turns out to be the start of a drama with a deadly outcome.
