In her third novel, Nesting Time, Ericsson touches an important area in life – the responsibility for children. The main character is the lawyer Fritjof, who works in the Child Care department. He lives alone, after several break-ups, but with a burning wish to be a father. His big hobby is ornithology, and at a “bird-rally” in Sweden he meets the ornithologist Ylva, who he, over time, develops a romantic relationship with. The issue of children is something which mainly concerns him, and when the options are clear and concrete, they choose very differently.
The title Nesting Time plays on the birds’ mating life, and in this novel, Kjersti Ericsson makes use of her vast knowledge of ornithology in a way that gives new, comical, but also thought evoking perspectives on the human beings’ ability for caretaking.
