The magpie is the only one of the animals that doesn’t live on the farm itself, but rather up in a tree. She wonders, am I one of you? And the answer she gets doesn’t settle her confusion: Maybe, you can be one of us, but you aren’t reallyone of us. The magpie considers – maybe she is more welcome somewhere else? So she moves. And maybe, then, the animals on the farm will see that they lost something they appreciated.
