Love Between Intelligent Men is a novel about a misplaced man who tries to escape reality. That is to say, he attempts to escape the expectations that one is supposed to take seriously oneself and one’s life in an oil-blessed, social democratic utopia. The man is a writer, and he lives partially alone in an allotment hut on Rodeløkka in Oslo, and partially with his wife in a terraced flat in a suburb of the capital. One late summer day he leaves his allotment to be present at an awards ceremony for the St. Olav’s Medal at the House of Literature. At the same time he leaves his present life, which is his fifth one. On his Hermes Baby portable typewriter he punches in the tale of this day, when everything is about to be transformed.
Love Between Intelligent Men is Terje Holtet Larsen at his most astute, a sharp and disturbing novel, which perhaps above all deals with the longing for existential gravity.
