The hameshifters are a secret society of animals that take on human shape, and live among us without our knowing. In fact, anyone you meet could be an animal in disguise – a wolf, a deer, a rat or maybe a cockroach. The battle for power between species can be ferocious, even deadly.

13-year-old Embla Wilde knows nothing of this. She lives a miserable life in a dull neigbourhood with her insufferable older sister who wants to be an influencer and parents who always interfere.

Embla has never heard of the hameshifter society, of their hidden cities in the Wilderness, or of Wilding, the magical force that makes nature obey them. But Embla has always felt that something about her is … different. That all starts to make sense when the hameshifters show up to tell her she is one of them.

There is just one tiny problem. Embla doesn’t know which animal she is.

As she starts preparing for The Wilderness Trial, which all young hameshifters must complete, she is having serious difficulties unlocking her powers. Why is Embla the only one? And why do the full-grown hameshifters treat her like she is special?

Together with her new friends, Harriet the squirrel and Jarne the raven, she learns of a prophecy that suggests Embla might be a uniquely powerful animal.

To discover her true nature, she must venture out into the dangerous Wilderness. All the while being hunted by the merciless Strixes, a cabal of owl witches with mysterious intentions, led by the evil snowy owl Whitewing.
