At the Next New Moon
Nominated for the Nordic Council Prize 1971
At the Next New Moon is the superb conclusion to the trilogy of Herdis.
Herdis is now eleven years old, and we follow her through puberty. The backdrop to the story is Bergen and partly Copenhagen at the end of and shortly after the First World War. Against this background, Herdis’ development unfolds—her relationship with herself and others, her struggle for freedom and independence. Herdis is a rebel without quite knowing what she is rebelling against, and eventually, she comes to the bitter but life-affirming realization that ‘the lonely rebellion is a failed rebellion.’
In At the Next New Moon, Nedreaas once again demonstrates her exceptionally fine ability to empathize with a young girl’s mind. Close and genuine, tender and vivid, she portrays a young person undergoing transformation.
