Maria is an engineer specializing in analysing material fatigue in ships. She met Ola as a student, and they’ve been together ever since: through studies, career and in love, working in the same places for the same large international company. But suddenly Maria has to go home from the US, where the couple has been posted together. Ola has met somebody else.

Now Maria is all alone. The structures that have carried her existence, are suddenly gone. Who will she be now? Determined to stay afloat, she thrusts forward, burying herself in her work – and brushes up against what seems to be a lifebuoy: her married colleague Erik. As they throw themselves into a secret affair, a difficult moral dilemma becomes urgent: Is Maria someone who can destroy another woman’s marriage?
