The first snow of the year fell over Buardalen as Olga watched her husband, Martin, walk out of the house, across the yard, toward the main road. Martin stopped, turned around, looked back, then he and the dog vanished into the white expanse. Only the dog turned up the next morning, scared and frail. Olga had seen her husband for the last time.

On this December evening, the municipal council is to hold its Christmas party at the restaurant that Olga and Martin run together, beneath the rockfall, right next to the glacier. Martin has refused to serve politicians who have long been pushing to build a hotel and a gondola here.

The mayor and the investors would love to “Make Odda Great Again.” Olga is pragmatic and easygoing. Martin is uncompromising and won’t back down.
