Stranger
“I have inherited your hands. Although mine are slimmer, it is easy to see traces of yours in mine. For many years, I found that uncomfortable.”
Stranger is a novel about an adult son who is not done investigating who his father was and how he became the person he is. A son who loved his father, but also feared him throughout his childhood, and most of all: feared becoming like him.
It is about growing up in the shadow of mental illness. About wanting to break free and sail to the other side of the world, only to be dragged back again to the challenges of your childhood home. How do you move on when you are both bound to those you love and at the same time want to distance yourself?
