Detective Harinder Singh reluctantly returns to the small town where he grew up to assist the local police in solving a murder case. The half-Indian Singh was never fully accepted in Elvestad and going back brings old conflicts back to life.

Much is the same as when he left. The Davidsen family still owns Elvestad’s cornerstone business and is part of the city’s power elite. But now the factory director’s son Axel, has been killed. Twenty months earlier, a young girl who was in the same group as Axel disappeared without a trace.

When Singh starts his investigation it soon becomes clear that many people have something to hide, and that far from everyone is telling the truth about where they were on the night of the murder.
