From the jury’s statement: Sammol’s voice, conveyed with intensity and empathy, and the dramatic story, with a not unconditionally happy ending, make Sami Bastard! a strong reading experience. Sammol, or Samuel as he’s called when he starts boarding school, is at the bottom of the social ladder. He is bullied for being Sami. Sammol misses his parents, yet he tries to fit in and act less like a Sami. Soon he feels he doesn’t belong anywhere. But there’s one thing nobody can take from Sammol; he likes to run, and he likes to run really fast.
Sami Bastard! tells the story of identity and belonging, and questions what home is.
